Admissions Policy

The BEng(DS&E) programme is a professional degree in Data Science and Engineering offered by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong, with support from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, Department of Mathematics, and Faculty of Law. It provides a solid foundation for students pursuing career and research in the data science and data engineering discipline.

Applicants who wish to apply for admission to the Programme 6262 Bachelor of Engineering in Data Science and Engineering (BEng(DS&E)) may apply through one of the following schemes, namely JUPAS, Non-JUPAS, International Admissions Scheme and Admission of Undergraduate Students from the Mainland*, in the same admission year.

About Data Science & EngineeringAbout Data Science & Engineering

In the big data era, in order to benefit from the treasure trove of data, e.g. enhance optimization, improve operations, facilitate decision, etc., data science & engineering becomes essential in many disciplines such as healthcare, media and entertainment, weather forecasting, transportation, marketing, and supply chain management. Big data analytics not only helps companies and researchers uncover hidden patterns, unknown correlations, and important insights from massive and diverse data sets, but also acts as an important driver for innovation development of new products/applications. In fact, data analytics provide a new paradigm for problem solving.

Data science & engineering covers wide-ranging areas from visualizing the analytic results from massive datasets, data security and privacy, the legal issues arising from data usage, effective application of statistical theories in big data analysis and the incorporation of those theories into big data analytic engines.

Institute of Data Science

The HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (IDS) is the first of the ten research institutes in the University’s technological development blueprint for the next decade. Drawing on strengths in varied disciplines, the Institute aspires to connect our expertise and a University-wide interest in establishing critical mass in key areas, and to explore frontier research and applications in data science, computing, mathematics, and statistics. Researchers and their research postgraduate students recruited under the Data Science Cluster in the HKU-100 Recruitment Campaign launched in 2021 will be jointly appointed by both the Institute and various Departments from STEM and non-STEM disciplines.
